Journal Deadlines:

Who can advertise in the Journal

• Advertising Dogs and Kennels is for MCOA Members and Associate Members in good standing only.  Please send all ads to the Editor.  All dogs advertised must be solely owned or co-owned by MCOA members or Associate members in good standing.
• Advertisements placed by MCOA Associate Members must include the phrase: "MCOA Associate Member."  Please advise the editor if you are advertising as an Associate Member and Welcome aboard!
• Names of non-members are allowed on Member/Associate Member ads, but the kennel names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses of non-members cannot be included.

How to Advertise in the MCOA Journal

• Please send ACTUAL PHOTO, not rescreen or print.  WE CANNOT ACCEPT PHOTOCOPIES, COMPUTER SCANS OR "DIGITAL PICTURES."

• The spelling of all names in Journal advertising is printed as submitted.

• HANDWRITTEN AD COPY IS PROHIBITED.  If you have any instructions for the Editor/Publisher as to the design of your ad, you may write them NEATLY on the ad copy page, but the ad copy itself MUST be typed.

• Three generation pedigrees:  the ad containing the pedigree must be designed by the advertiser and by computer on a clean, high quality sheet of white paper (with NO handwriting on it), leaving a large enough space for the picture.  The Publisher will shoot the ad, and drop in the picture.  If the names and "branches" of the pedigree are not even, if the ad contains spelling or grammatical errors, or is in violation of any Journal policy, the ad will be redone by the Editor without the pedigree.

• Requesting right hand page placement is an additional $10.00.  It is not necessary to request right-hand page placement when doing a two page ad.  Two page ads are automatically produced as a spread, as long as it meets the deadline. 

• Breeders Directory:  four insertions is $25.00 or $7.00 per insertion. This is NOT open to MCOA Associate members.

• Commercial advertisements add 30%.  Commercial ads are defined in this magazine as any ad for a product or service, regardless of whether or not the advertiser is affiliated with the MCOA.  Please contact the Editor for mechanical requirements on commercial ads.

• Special Veterans:  Veterans are on a first come basis when space is available at no charge.

• Awards (Issue #4):  Awards recognition section.  All award winners are eligible for 1/2 page in this section:

Collar Award winners:  no charge
Hall of Fame and Working Dogs:  $35.00

Reserving Ad Pages/Covers

Ad pages and covers may be reserved by sending in a $25.00 per page deposit which is credited toward the cost of the ad.  Ad page deposits are forfeited if advertisements are not postmarked by the advertising deadline.  Cover deposits are nonrefundable.  If you are reserving a cover (front, back, exterior, or interior) call the editor to find out which covers are available.  To the best of our ability advertisements appear in the Journal in the order they are received.  Please call the Editor if you need assistance with your ad.

Color Advertisements

MCOA advertisers who wish to place a color advertisement in an issue of the Journal are required to make (by credit card) a $50.00 per-color-page non-refundable deposit at the time of the order.  This deposit will be credited toward the $200.00 color production fee.  At the time the ad is submitted, the advertiser must pay the balance ($150.00) of the color production cost, plus the standard cost of the ad (plus the cost of additional pictures, if any) by check or credit card.  Should the advertiser back out of advertising in the issue, or back out of advertising in color, the Journal will keep the deposit.  Said deposit cannot be used as a deposit on future color pages, toward the cost of black & white ads, or cover reservations.  Advertisers who place color ads are responsible to paying the cost of color printing in full once the issue has been printed.

Color page production (including color backgrounds and color type if requested):  add $200.00.  This does not include the printing charge, which is contingent on production requirements and the number of color advertisements.  Color pages are placed according to production requirements.  Call the Editor for rates and availability.

MCOA Journal "Truth in Advertising"

• HEALTH TESTING CLAIMS:  All claims of OFA, CERF, or GDC certifications on any Mastiff advertised in the MCOA Journal must be accompanied by the corresponding permanent certification numbers written on the ad.  Photocopies of permanent certifications are not needed.  All OTHER health testing claims, such as "OFA PRELIM," "Thyroid normal" (non-OFA), "vWD clear" and other "certifications" can only be made in Journal advertising if the advertiser sends a copy of the laboratory report (not a veterinarian's letter of opinion) with the ad as proof.  Generic statements about a particular dog's certifications and reports, such as "he passed all genetic tests" without further clarification will not be allowed.

• SHOW RANK CLAIMS:  All claims of show rank on any Mastiff advertised in the MCOA Journal will be accompanied by the "as of" date of the ranking (such as "#4 MCOA BOB (3rd qtr. '97)," due to the lag time between ranking, publishing, and distribution.  These claims will be verified by the Journal staff.  The Journal will allow rankings published by other sources ONLY with accompanying wirtten documentation, such as photocopy of a standings page in a dog show magazine.  This must be submitted with the ad.

• NON SHOW CERTIFICATIONS:  All claims of non show certifications, such as CGC, TDI, TT, etc. must have supporting documentation submitted with the ad, such as a photocopy of the certificate (a copy of the TDI license is all that is needed for CGC/TDI).  It is not necessary to submit any proof of AKC titles, Collar Awards, Hall of Fame Induction or Working Dog titles; these can be verified by the Journal staff. 

• The use of the Mastiff Standard in advertising copy is prohibited.

• These policies extend to the MCOA Breeders Directory, published in the Journal.

• The Editor reserves the right to remove or make changes to any claim that is incorrect, illegible, does not meet these guidelines, or cannot be verified in a timely fashion.

• All advertisements are subject to review by the Journal staff.  HOWEVER, it is the overall responsibility of the ADVERTISER to make sure that all claims are true and accurate.

Billing Policy

Billing Policy Advertisements that are not paid for on submission, and that must be billed by MCOA will be charged a $15.00 billing fee.  Invoices not paid within 30 days will be issued a 25% service charge.  entries for MCOA National Specialities will not be accepted from individuals who are in arrears to MCOA.
