DNA Research - Epilepsy In Mastiffs
In March 1998, Dr. Gary Johnson, from the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, agreed to initiate research into the inheritance of epilepsy in Standard Schnauzers. Samples from affected individuals and their families in additional breeds have been added gradually, and the research is now expanding to all breeds. Preliminary results with the Standard Schnauzers are encouraging, and the research is continuing. Markers or mutations located in one breed may be the same or closely related to mutations in other breeds, or there may be different mutations.
We're pleased that the MCOA is interested in being involved in the epilepsy research project. At this point, what we need from you is promotion and encouragement for Mastiff breeders and owners to participate. Dr. Johnson is not seeking funding from parent clubs - the epilepsy research is moving forward with funding from several sources, and all breeds with affected animals are being recruited. To do this (or any) DNA research, we need a 4- or 5-generation pedigree of the litter where the problem appeared, and blood samples from the affected(s), all available littermates, both parents, and where available, grandparents (and beyond). The entire family does not need to be sent all together - get the word out to those who should participate, and encourage them to send samples. The purpose of this research is certainly not to lay blame or point fingers - it is to find answers so that breeders can use their good dogs, continue to breed the dogs they love, and produce healthy dogs. If markers can be located, and carriers identified, breeders can make educated decisions about who to breed, and avoid producing affected offspring.
Forms and DNA can be submitted to Dr. Johnson with the help of your vet. All information will be kept confidential.
